Need for School Substitutes in Geauga County
Many adult community members have probably thought about substitute work in the schools but were uncertain about the application process. The basic qualifications for credentialing as a substitute are as follows:
1. Teacher Substitutes: Most hold a minimum of a BA Degree to substitute on a short term basis (5 days or less in each assignment). Long Term Teacher Substitutes hold a BA Degree in a specific subject area such as English. These applicants are able to cover a classroom in their academic area for more than 5 consecutive days.
2. Educational Assistant Substitutes: Classroom Assistants must hold a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED to apply for a substitute license. There is no limit to the number of days they can hold a classroom assignment. Licensed teachers are eligible to substitute as classroom assistants.
3. Nurse Substitutes: The Geauga County ESC and local Geauga County School Districts employ RN and LPN personnel for which substitute coverage is sought. Licensed nurses may accept short or long term assignments upon receipt of their Ohio Department of Education License.
Adults meeting the basic academic requirements are able to initiate the credentialing process with the Ohio Department of Education. Teachers, Nurses and Assistants must all apply for a license from the Ohio Department of Education. The State also requires completed BCI and FBI background checks. Assistants take one additional step, which is completion of the Para-Professional Exam. Each of these steps can be completed in one visit at The Geauga County Educational Service Center; 470 Center Street, Bldg. 2; Chardon, Ohio 44024. Interested applicants should call in advance at 440.279.1700 for information on the cost of the license, and background checks. Some applicants have recently completed checks for other reasons (ex. Volunteer work) which are still valid, thus reducing the fees. Generally, it will cost in the range of $70.00 to establish educational working credentials.
The Ohio Department of Education will record credentials as “pending” as soon as the application is received. The candidate may then identify the districts where they are willing to work for the County Substitute List. This list is updated and distributed monthly. Each district establishes its own daily rate for substitutes. Overall, the range in Geauga County is $75.00-$92.00 depending on the type of substitute required.
Currently, there is an urgent need for qualified substitute personnel in all Geauga County Schools.
For many individuals, substitute work is an excellent pathway to obtain full time school employment. It is also a great opportunity for adults who are seeking part time or temporary work. Substitutes bring to the classroom knowledge and experience often obtained from their involvement in non-educational work environments. School personnel and substitutes alike benefit from this interaction.
